Jalal Al-Din Rumi, widely regarded as the preeminent Sufi Muslim poet, was born in 1207 in Balkh, Khoraan. He later relocated with his parents to Iconium, where he assumed the position of Professor of mystic theosophy. Jalal Al-Din Rumi passed away in 1273 in Iconium. During his early years in Iconium, he established the Mawlawi dervishes, who are famously known as the 'whirling dervishes' even to this day. Notably, his magnum opus, the "Mathnawi," encompasses profound explanations of spiritual and theological concepts within the Sunni Muslim tradition. This monumental work spans six volumes, consisting of over 30,000 double-rhymed verses. The completion of this work spanned a period of 25 years.

This ancient manuscript is another example of a Diwan, mystic Sufi Islamic poetry. This takes the form of 6 to 15 couplets, and expresses Sufi ideals in lyrics. This particular manuscript follows a familiar pattern, with the couplets enclosed within gold lines, in a regular pattern. To add to the attractiveness different coloured papers are used.

Single leaf, Persian manuscript on burnished paper, 15ll. of black bold nastaliq script, arranged in two columns separated by double intercolumnar rules in blue with meandering leaves, text set within broad gilt and polychrome rules, mounted,colophoned and signed by Sadiq Bat, son of Rajit Bat, dated 21 Rajab 1234 AH / 16 May 1819 AD, at the end of the British Regency period, text 22.1 x 12.7cm / frame 25.5 x 30.5cm
This attractive manuscript is from the Iskandenama, one of the five epic poems “Kamseh”, the first entitled “Treasury of Mysteries”, the next three love stories and the final poem the “Adventures of Alexander the Great”.
