"AN OTTOMAN CEREMONICAL TEXTILE
DAST-I MAL "

An annual ceremony took place on the 15th day of Ramadan in Topkapi Palace. This event centred around the retrieval of the cardigan once worn by the Prophet Muhammad. The revered garment was delicately removed from its designated box. Another prominent feature of the ceremony was the presence of meticulously prepared DAST-I MALs, These handkerchiefs, imbued with profound spiritual significance, were eagerly anticipated by the attendees. To be granted one of these precious artefacts was considered a tremendous honour, bestowed upon esteemed guests as a token of utmost reverence.Recipients of the DAST-I MALs understood the immense value placed upon these items and assumed the responsibility of safeguarding them with great care throughout their lives. Upon the recipients' passing, these sacred artefacts were draped over the body, ensuring a continued spiritual bond as they were prepared for their final journey.
