AN OTTOMAN-TURKEY MEDALLIONS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

The World War One Star, also known as the Gallipoli Star medal/badge, holds great historical significance. Crafted in 1915, it features enamel and nickel-plated brass materials and measures. A fragment of the original ribbon is still preserved, adding to its authenticity. This distinguished military decoration, called the War Medal, was first awarded by Mehmed V Reşad on March 1, 1915. It recognized the remarkable valour and heroism displayed by soldiers from the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers during the challenging conflicts that took place on the Ottoman fronts throughout the First World War. Notably, it stands as the final medal bestowed during the existence of the Ottoman Empire. Accompanying this extraordinary medal is a portrait medallion depicting Sultan Mehmed II (1432-1481). Created in the early 19th century and issued in 1823, this circular medallion showcases a profile portrait of the esteemed Ottoman Emperor. The reverse side bears an inscription that translates to "Born in Adrianople in Romelia in 1430, served until 1481," offering a tangible connection to the life and reign of this influential historical figure.
