A MUGHAL MINIATURE, ZAL MEETS RUDABEH, SHAHNAME, MUGHAL INDIA, 20TH CENTURY
Single leaf, ink and gouache on paper, heightened in gilt, miniature raised in relief and painted on gesso creating a three-dimensional effect, portraying a scene where Rudabah let down her hair to help Zal ascend the palace walls, according to Shahname, Zal kissed her tresses and used his lasso instead, Rudabeh’s maidens are portrayed looking fondly down on Zal, image a little rubbed, colours a little darkened, laid down within brown borders and on a blue album page, framed in gilt frame, miniature 11cm x 19.7cm, frame 29.7cm x 37.4cm
