Ibn ʿArabshah (1389/1392–1450) was an Arab writer, scholar, and traveler who lived during the reign of Timur (1370–1405). Born in Damascus, he was deported to Samarkand as a young boy when Timur conquered his home city around 1400. In Samarkand, he was trained as a court secretary and studied under Central Asia’s great scholars, learning Persian, Turkish, and Mongol. After traveling through Crimea, he settled in Adrianople (Edirne) and served in the court of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed I, translating Arabic books into Turkish and Persian. Eventually, he returned to Damascus, where he completed his famous work, ‘Aja’ib al-Maqdur fi Nawa’ib Taymur (“The Wonders of Destiny Concerning the Ravages of Timur”) in 1435. This work, considered a highlight of late-Classical Arabic literature, provides a critical account of Timur’s life and conquests, contrasting with the hagiographies produced by Timurid court officials. Ibn ʿArabshah later moved to Egypt, where he died.
Jacobus Golius (1596–1667) was a Dutch Orientalist and mathematician renowned for his contributions to the study of Arabic and other Middle Eastern languages. He studied at Leiden University, where he later became a professor of Arabic and mathematics. Golius travelled extensively in the Middle East, including Syria and the Arabian Peninsula, to collect manuscripts and deepen his understanding of Arabic and Islamic culture. He is best known for his Lexicon Arabico-Latinum, a comprehensive Arabic-Latin dictionary that remained a key reference work for centuries. Golius also translated and annotated various Arabic scientific and literary texts, significantly contributing to the development of Oriental studies in Europe.
