Fausto Zonaro, a renowned Orientalist, was born in Italy. After moving to Istanbul, yielded an impressive assemblage of around 1,300 paintings, capturing the city's intricate facets in exquisite detail. It is noteworthy that numerous of these magnificent artworks continue to adorn the halls of esteemed palaces, including Dolmabahçe Palace, as well as various national collections.
Over time, Fausto Zonaro's artistic talents gained recognition among the esteemed circles of Constantinople's aristocracy. During his tenure as a painting instructor to Munir Pasha's wife, a notable figure as the Minister of Protocol, Zonaro and his colleague Pante became acquainted with influential artists of Istanbul's era, including Osman Hamdi Bey, a prominent figure in the art scene.
In a significant turn of events in 1896, Zonaro's career soared to new heights when he was appointed as the court painter, bearing the prestigious title of "Ressam-ı Hazret-i Şehriyari" by Abdulhamid II, the Ottoman Sultan. This recognition came about through the intervention of the Russian ambassador, who had introduced the sultan to Zonaro's exquisite work. Notably, one painting that captivated the sultan's attention was "Il reggimento imperiale di Ertugrul sul ponte di Galata" (translated as "The Imperial Regiment of Ertugrul on the Galata Bridge"), which the sultan himself acquired.
Today, Zonaro's works enjoy great acclaim, particularly within the realm of Orientalist art.
