First edition, three volumes, 80pp, 76pp, 100pp, [4 general index], 2 maps, 120 steel engraved plates including titles, drawn from nature by William H. Bartlett, William Purser and Thomas Allow, all plates with their original tissue guards, spine rubbed due to age, previous owner’s book plate verso front cover, light occasional spotting, overall in very good condition
John Carne, traveller and author of the text, visited Constantinople, Greece, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt. He then started writing for the New Monthly Magazine under the title ‘Letters from the East’. The majority of the views are by William Bartlett, who also travelled extensively in the Levant. Third volume includes plates by Thomas Allow, who also travelled to the Levant around 1836-7.
