SIGNATURES OF CRAFTSMEN ON ISLAMIC MONUMENTS IN EGYPT ( مصر), Tawqiʿāt al-Ṣināʿa ʿalā al-Āthār al-Islāmiyya fī Masr), BY HASAN ABD AL-WAHHAB
1954
An Arabic book on Islamic architectural monuments and their craftsmen, 25 pages of introduction and 19 pages of plates, cardboard binding in brown hues

Abstract:
Signatures of craftsmen on Islamic architectural monuments are few and rare. Researching them requires studying the origins and development of industries in the Islamic era, delving into the pages of Arabic literature to find biographies of craftsmen and artisans among scholars, writers, and princes, and investigating the literature written on crafts and biographies of craftsmen. This is what we will address as an introduction to this research.
The expansion of urban development after the Islamic conquests and the proliferation of buildings, both religious, civil, and military, led to the emergence of Islamic art, which in turn contributed to the flourishing of industries. This is natural, as the prosperity of industries depends on the progress of a country. The more advanced a country is in terms of urban development, the more industries rise and flourish, especially with the availability of luxury and wealth. The conquerors integrated with the local population and engaged in the crafts and industries that they practiced (1).
Ibn Khaldun says: "When the sea of civilization expands and seeks perfection, it includes among its attributes..."
(1) A lecture delivered at the Academy on April 19, 1954.
(1) Al-Muqaddimah, Part 1, p. 19. In it, Amr ibn al-As responds to Umar ibn al-Khattab when he asked him: "Where did you get this?" He said, "He is treating what the people of Egypt treat with crafts and agriculture."
