Pope Pius VI, who ruled the Catholic Church from 1775 until his death in 1799, strongly opposed the French Revolution and its crackdown on the Church in France. Napoleon Bonaparte's army conquered the Papal States in 1796. Pius VI refused to give up his worldly power, and for that, he was taken prisoner by the French and brought to France in 1798. He died there a year and a half later. His reign as pope lasted over 20 years, making it one of the longest in history.
