THE LAST EMPIRE: PHOTOGRAPHY IN BRITISH INDIA, 1855-1911, BY CLARK WORSWICK, PUBLISHED BY APERTURE, 1990, FROM RODERICK GRADIDGE COLLECTION
A photo album, 147 pages, with footnotes, comprising the first known photographs of the Himalayas, British colonial troops, Asian landscapes, and native princes from collections throughout the world, cloth bound with original dust jacket
Clark Worswick is a noted photographer and filmmaker. Ainslie Embree, a professor at Columbia University, has published numerous books on India.
Provenance: From the personal collection of Roderick Gradidge, with inscriptions, photographs, and letters from participants of the 1998 Lutyens Trust India tour. Given to Gradidge during a 1998 expedition organised by The Lutyens Trust, this edition captures the admiration for British-Indian architecture and cultural history shared by all participants, including architect Edwin Lutyens’ admirers. The book is adorned with signatures from fellow travellers, who joined Gradidge and C20 Society member Brent Smith on a tour of significant locations that inspired Lutyens’ designs for New Delhi, especially the iconic Viceroy’s House (now Rashtrapati Bhavan).
The book includes personal mementos from this journey: photographs of Roderick Gradidge and the group , letters, and messages addressed to Gradidge. These additions make this volume a remarkable collector’s item, bearing witness to a historic architectural journey that bridged British and Indian cultural heritage.
