A Turbah or Mohr is a small piece of soil or clay used during salad (Islamic Prayers) to symbolise earth. The use of a Turbah is compulsory in the Twelve Shia school of Islam, The most favoured soil is that of Karbala, the site of the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali. During prayer, the She’ites place their foreheads on the clay stones; the letters thus leave a mark on their foreheads as a testimony to their devoutness.
