Sir Howard Montagu Colvin (1919–2007) was a renowned British architectural historian and a key figure in the field of architectural research, particularly concerning British architecture from the mediaeval to Georgian periods. Colvin’s pivotal work, A Biographical Dictionary of British Architects 1600–1840, is celebrated for its detailed archival research and remains an essential reference in the field. He was instrumental in establishing rigorous historical methods in architectural studies. In 1948, he joined St John’s College, Oxford, where he remained a Fellow until his passing in 2007. Colvin held significant positions in heritage and arts preservation, serving on the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (1963–76), the Historic Buildings Council for England (1970–84), and the Royal Fine Art Commission (1962–72), among other influential roles dedicated to protecting England’s architectural heritage. He received numerous honours for his contributions, including being knighted in 1995 for his services to architectural history.
