From a collection published from 1835 until 1863 by the publishing house Firmin-Didot Fréres, analysing Egypt and its language, history, sultans, governing styles and geography by M.J.M. Jouannin and M. Jules Van Gaver, 212 pages, 1 folding map of Cairo and numerous illustrations, leather bound with spine gilt in compartments, 21.5 x 13.5 x 4.5cm
The translator of Eastern Languages to the King of France and the director of College Louis Le Grand, JOUANNIN (1783-1844), resided in Istanbul between 1803 and 1810 and wrote The Ottoman History, comprising the period until the reign of Sultan Mahmud. The book is remembered with its illustrations which are taken from important sources such as Grelot, Barlett and d’Ohsson. Jouannin studied at the “L’École des Jeunes de Langues” in Istanbul. He travelled to the Middle East between 1817-1826. The material he collected became a useful source for writers of his time; such as, Dupre, Tancoigne, Andreossy.
