"EARLY 19TH CENTURY MENZILNAME
A SCROLL ABOUT ARCHERY RECORDS,
SIGNED BY MEHMED NAILI,
TURKEY, OTTOMAN
DATED 1233AH-1817/18AD"

Ottoman Turkish manuscript on vellum, written in naskh ghubari decorated with gold and polychrome scrolls, headpiece on thicker paper, in a red velvet embroidered case
At the beginning circles;
Include Sultan Murad IV. Ghazi’s (1623-1640) archery distance record,(1070,5) unit of length
Include Sultan Selim III. Ghazi ‘s (1789-1807) archery distance record, (1012). unit of length
And archery records of Istanbul’s noble men (pashas, aghas, beys)
This is a document recording the various shooting and archery locations in Istanbul, giving details of the ranges as well as the records achieved by archers in each location. The ranges and records are given in gez, a until measuring 0.61 m. The document opens with the details of the archery records of the Sultans Murad IV and Selim III. In the small cartouche with a gold border below, are the dates 1122 AH (1710-11 AD) and 1174 AH (1760-1 AD). This is followed by the name of the scribe Mehmed Naili and the date 1233 AH (1817-18 AD). This would seem to indicate that Mehmed Naili wrote this work in 1233 AH on the basis of and updating two earlier menzilnames. The scribe’s name and the date also appear again at the bottom of the scroll.
